Ranked #1 Public Golf Course in South Dakota
(Summer 2017) In May, the 2017 Golfweek's Best: State-by-State Courses You Can Play was released with the Golf Club at Red Rock again receiving the top award. “We are very pleased to receive this ranking for the last 12 years,” explains Kevin Buntrock, course owner/manager. “This is the status we strive to achieve annually and it means a great deal to us.”

Other golf courses in the Black Hills to make the top five standings include Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs, Meadowbrook Golf Course and Hart Ranch Golf Course both in Rapid City. “We are honored to be with this group of great golf courses in the area,” says Buntrock.

Golf Digest released its Best Golf Courses in South Dakota (2017-18) in June. The Golf Club at Red Rock received top recognition as the number one Public Golf Course in South Dakota. Sutton Bay Golf Course in Agar was ranked as the top private club in the state. Other courses noted in the top five included Dakota Dunes Country Club in Brandon, Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls and Hart Ranch in Rapid City.

Golf Club at Red Rock Celebrates 15th Anniversary
(Spring 2017) It’s hard to believe 15 years have gone by since the opening of the Golf Club at Red Rock. During these years, the course has become a haven for area residents as well as travelers to the Black Hills. Let’s look back at how it started.

The inspiration for the Golf Club at Red Rock formed when developers Kevin Buntrock and Don Ward were playing in a US Mid-Amateur qualifier at the Powder Horn Golf Club, in Sheridan, WY. “Don and I played in a lot of amateur tournaments. At the Mid-Am in Sheridan, we started talking about building something similar in Rapid City.”

In August 1999,  the 340 acre subdivision of the Hamm ranch was under contract by Red Rock Development Company destined to become what is now the Estates and Golf Club at Red Rock. “It was one of those pieces of land that was hard to picture as a golf course and residential neighborhood right away,” comments Ward.

Lead by golf architect Ron Farris, construction of the 130 acre golf course started in March 2001. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw the site,” explains Farris. “As a golf course designer, I always dream of working with a piece of land that has natural beauty and is suitable for playing golf.”
Furness Golf Construction from Charleviox, Michigan was brought in to build the course. “Crews shaped the greens and bunkers with front-end loaders,” recalls Buntrock. “They’re artists and their canvas is the land.”

The course opened in 2002 and by 2005 the accolades and press on the new course started rolling in. It began with GolfWeek magazine ranking the Golf Club at Red Rock in the top 40 of America’s Best New Courses in the United States. In 2006, a review by Golf Digest’s golf critic Ron Whitten wrote, “it is perhaps the best ground-hugging golf course laid out on a mountain slope since Coore and Crenshaw’s Plantation Course in Kapalua in Hawaii a dozen years ago.” The club continues to receive top ratings by GolfWeek, Golf Digest, Tripping.com, Wanderbat.com and other travel websites.

Red Rock Participates in the Golf Expo in Sioux Falls

(Winter 2017) On March 4 - 5, Golf Club at Red Rock staff participated in the Annual Great Plains Golf Expo in Sioux Falls. The Expo offered attendees the opportunity to demo clubs, take a quick lesson and meet vendors with a variety of products and services.

"While we were the only business from the western side of the state to exhibit, it was a great way to encourage golfers to check out Red Rock and all the wonderful courses in the Black Hills," comments Jason. "Feedback from attendees was encouraging."
